Whilst only small and relatively cheap, an air filter is a hugely important part of a car. When your engine runs it does so by utilising a mixture of air and fuel. If the air filter becomes dirty then this will upset the balance of the mixture, meaning it is too fuel rich and more likely to damage or choke the engine.
It is usually advised that the filter should be changed every year or after 12,000 miles. If it is not functioning properly it may allow debris such as leaves or dust into the engine and these, mixed with the oil, can cause damage to parts such as the pistons.
