The brake drum is a key component in any braking system, and assuring that it is in excellent condition is a vital step toward keeping your car both safe and fit to pass its next MOT. The drum itself is a metal cylinder which is attached to the wheel. When the brake is applied, brake shoes on the inside of the drum are pressed against the surface of the drum. The friction created by this contact slows the wheel down and ultimately stops it altogether.
Brake drums are made of metal and, like any moving part which is frequently in use they are prone to wear and tear and damage caused over time by corrosion. If worn or damaged drums are left in place your vehicle will be unsafe and will fail its’ MOT.
