When utilising a drum brake system, allowances have to be made for the gradual wearing down of the brake lining. Whilst a point will eventually be reached at which the drum and/or shoe have to be replaced, a lower level of wear can be dealt with by an automatic self adjusting system.
The adjusting system works in a way which takes account of the greater distance which has to be travelled by the shoes as the surfaces become thinner. By moving through a small gear one tooth at a time, it ensures that the ‘at rest’ position of the shoe is closer to the drum that it was, thus reducing the hydraulic pressure and fluid needed to bring them together.
