Brake hoses perform the vital task of shifting brake fluid under hydraulic pressure from the brake pipe and to the calipers. The pressure thus created means the calipers move together and the pads clamp around the brake disc. The hoses themselves, which sometimes go by the name of brake lines, are manufactured from flexible reinforced rubber. Impervious to the corrosive effects of oil and other fluids, they are also capable of handling the high pressure levels upon which the braking system depends.
The combination of long term hydraulic movement and outside influences can, over time, cause even reinforced rubber to perish and crack. If this is the case, they will have to be replaced in order to maintain the integrity of the system, as well as ensuring safe driving and an MOT pass.
