The correct functioning of the brake caliper is utterly vital to having brakes which operate successfully and is therefore a prerequisite of both a successful MOT test and safe driving in general. The function performed by the brake caliper is that of applying pressure to the brake pads in order to bring them down against the surface of the brake disc. In doing so it will slow down the spinning of the disk and, in turn, the wheel and the motion of the car.
Whilst calipers vary in size and shape depending upon the model and make of car, with some sporting more pistons than others, the basic principle behind their operation remains the same, and so does the necessity to ensure that they are in full working order.
