Unlike the other brakes on a car, the handbrake is applied when the car is already stationery, and works to prevent it moving when it is parked on uneven ground. The handbrake works via a drum brake system, with shoes being applied to the inside of the brake drum in order to create the friction needed to stop it from moving.
Since the handbrake works when the car is stationery it is less prone to wear and tear than other brakes, but is still subject to corrosion of the metal parts such as the drum and shoe, and fraying or snapping of the cable which connects the handbrake lever to the drum. If the handbrake is to work properly, any worn or damaged parts need to be replaced immediately.
